The Sad Story of David and Michal
September 12, 2025Genesis 2:24-25 – For this reason, a man shall leave his father and his mother and cleave unto his wife, and they become one flesh. [First in their “coupling,” and then quite literally in the bodies of their children.] Adam and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed. [God created nothing ugly, vulgar, or obscene. Everything God created was good and was created for a good purpose; and since “God is Love,” that purpose is love. God created all things to make love possible in this material world. As Paul writes in Hebrews 13:4, “Marriage is honorable among all, and the marriage bed is undefiled.”]
Exodus 20:14 – “You shall not commit adultery.” [Jesus affirms this 7th Commandment in Matthew 5:31-32 & 19:8-9. Sexual relationships outside of marriage are roundly condemned in Leviticus 18, and the death penalty is decreed for most in Deuteronomy 22:13-30.]
Proverbs 18:22 – “He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord.”
Malachi 2:10-16 – “Let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth.” Because (1) “The Lord has been witness between you and the wife of your youth,” (2) “she is your companion and (3) your wife by covenant,” and (4) the Lord “desires godly children.” Marriage is “the Lord’s Holy Institution, which He loves.” “The Lord God hates divorce, for it covers one’s garment with violence.”
Matthew 19:4-6 – Jesus emphasizes the fundamental truths of Genesis 1:27 and 2:24-25 when he says, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?” Jesus then adds his own comment, deepening our understanding: “So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”
1 Corinthians 7:1-11 – [Paul’s sage advice concerning marriage begins here.] “In order to avoid sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife and let each woman have her own husband. Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another except by common consent for a limited time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; but come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. .. It is better to marry than to burn with passion. .. A wife is not to depart from her husband, and a husband is not to divorce his wife.”
Ephesians 5:22-33 – “Wives, submit to your husbands, as to the Lord. .. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for her. .. So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. ‘For this reason, a man shall leave his father and his mother and unite with his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ This is a great mystery concerning Christ and the church. Let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.” [See also Colossians 3:18-19]
Revelation 1:8 & 11 and 22:13 – “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last, says the Lord.” [Reflect deeply on what I call “Biblical Symmetry” – Genesis 1 & 2 is the Creation, while Revelation 21 & 22 is the New Creation. Sin & evil enter the world in Genesis 3 and are destroyed in Revelation 20. Marriage is depicted in Genesis 4:1-2 and Revelation 19:7 – “The marriage of the Lamb has come and his bride has made herself ready.” * The Bible ends as it begins!]
Proverbs 18:22 – “He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord.”
